How We Began...

December 29, 2009 - why I started this blog....

Last night I headed over to curltopia (after going to urbanbella and the product I was looking for was sold out - MissJessies: Rapid Recovery Deep Conditioner). I was standing there waiting for the receptionist to be done speaking with a customer. As I stood, I listened to the conversation.

The receptionist was speaking to a young woman, probably in her late twenties on the products she should be using for her natural hair. To me, the woman's hair length suggested that she had been natural for at least 6 months - but it did look dry and her 4a/b hair texture could have used some products to control her naturally tightly curled hair (VERY similar to my own).

I listened as the customer stated she washed her hair, EVERYDAY!!! I was shocked - but I kept a very calm face and continued to listen. After the receptionist went back and forth with the customer to make sure she was actually using shampoo on her hair every morning, she went one to explain that shampooing should only be done every 7 to 10 days (mentally, I'm shaking my head in agreement). She told the customer that she could wet it and add some conditioner daily to get that "re-curl" effect that I know she was aiming for.

The receptionist turned to me at that point and asked if I had an appointment or need products. I responded with products and she asked if I knew what I wanted and I certainly did. Miss Jessies always does a BOGO free at the end of the year and I had been stretching my Rapid Treatment to last until this time. I was excited to be spending $48.00 to get TWO 8oz sized containers of this stuff...I do like it, but it's the ONLY product from Miss Jessies (that I've tried) that I continue to use.

Long story short...I purchased my products and hesitated as the young lady and two of her friends pondered over what products she should get. I was close to making my own suggestions to her, but thought, the receptionist did a good job, shes in good hands...now, for a little back ground on the receptionist....

To be blunt...she's white, with wavy blond hair. Not exactly the person that you want to look at and get advise from about your natural hair - expecially if you're just starting out. Now, I'm not discrediting the receptionist, because, like I said - she knew what she was talking about.

It dawned on my a few months ago that all of these hair care lines (curls, missjessies, kinky-curly, jane carter), are founded and owned by people that don't have hair like me. So...just how are they going to know what "I" need?

...and thus, I have decided to start a blog (of which I hope people search for, find and comment on) about my natural hair journey ...although, to date it has been 1 year, 5 months and some change since I did the BIG CHOP (lol).

I want to share with all of you the experiences I have had with my hair journey...the ups and the downs (plenty)...and the lessons I learn...the problems I've run into, etc.

Where to begin....from the start I guess...ActI.
